Events Calender, News & Events, Swimming 3 Comments

Think you’re a good swimmer?

Want to test your swimming endurance whilst raising money for Help for Heroes?

This ultimate endurance challenges individuals to swim a mile, on the hour, for 24 hours. It has quickly become an iconic event that has seen competitors fly in from all over Europe. In 2008 only 7 of the starters completed the 24 mile challenge. Have you got what it takes?

When?

Starts 09.30am  30th April 2011

Finishes 09.30am  1st May 2011

Where?

Guildford Lido, Stoke Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU1 1HB

 Who?

  • Competent swimmers over 25 years old on 31st December 2011 can enter the “Full Monty” 24 mile challenge.
  • Competent 18-24 yrs olds are warmly invited to swim a mile on the hour for 12 hours.
  • This is not a paddle in the pool – this is hard, challenging and needs cold water acclimatisation.
  • Swimming a mile on the hour and whatever is left, is the rest period!

Yes they have Julian when it was first done in 2008, 7 completed it, plenty of others did pretty well but one of the biggest problems seems to have been the chlorinated environment of the indoor pool. This year’s event is in a heated outdoor pool so that should help – although air temp could be challenging. There’s the overnight 12 mile, 12 hour version as an “easier” option!

easier!! hopefully the weather will be a little warmer by then – i’d be interested to see if the outdoor pool helps facilitate more finishers? Whats the limit of competitors?

  • King Julian

this sounds like a huge challenge – i’ve only swum up to 9 miles before, anyone gone this full distance?
